Episode 51: SEYMOUR-JOHNSON AFB: A Dismembered Body on Base

High School sweethearts, Michelle and Douglas Terek endured a long 3-year separation, while Michelle finished high school and got a degree and while Douglas was off enlisting in the Air Force. By 1990, they tied the knot and everything seemed perfect. Until it wasn’t. In August 1993, after a night of partying, Douglas called the police to tell them he did an awful thing. And when the police arrived at their on-base residence – they discovered more than they bargained for…

Ep49: FAMILY ANNIHILATOR: TSgt Edward Zakrzewski

In 1994, Air Force Technical Sergeant Edward Zakrzewski seemed to be living the dream – he was going to night college, had one more year before getting his degree – he was working at Eglin AFB, he had a beautiful wife, Sylvia, and two kids – a boy and a girl.

But like every picture-perfect family – there was turmoil, and talks about divorce made Edward uneasy. So much so, that when his son called him at work on June 9^th, 1994, Edward came up with a plan. Execute the entire family. Then flee the continental United States.

But a true crime staple from the 90s – UNSOLVED MYSTERIES – would lead to his demise – as it didn’t matter where he went, he couldn’t hide from the ever-popular show. (Btw – I tried to find the segment of UNSOLVED MYSTERIES – but it was nowhere to be found. I believe, it aired as a short segment and not as one of the three main stories in each episode).

Episode 42 – Fetal Abduction – The Murder of Cindy Ray

On July 23, 1987, 23-year old Air Force wife, Cindy Ray, had a well-baby appointment. Her toddler was with the babysitter. Her husband, Sam Ray, was doing his normal security forces duty. Cindy was scheduled to pick up her husband from work due to the fact that they only had one family car. But Cindy called to say she was running late. When Sam went to look for Cindy at the clinic, Cindy had seemingly vanished.

But how does an extremely pregnant woman go missing from the base clinic at Kirtland AFB, NM?

This is Part 1 of a 3-part series on Serial Killer – Dennis Rader (a.k.a. BTK). In this episode, I explore Dennis Rader’s childhood, his 4-years in the Air Force, his initial failed attempts at kidnapping women, and the 1974 Otero Family Murders, where he killed, 38-year old Joseph Otero Senior (retired Air Force Master Sergeant), 34-year old Julie Otero, 11-year old Josephine Otero, and 9-year old Joseph Otero Junior. Margot’s main source of information for this episode was John Douglas’s 2007 book, “Inside the Mind of BTK: The True Story Behind the Thirty-Year Hunt for the Notorious Wichita Serial Killer.”

Ep19 – INFAMOUS: The Astronaut Love Triangle – Lisa Nowak’s Diaper Assault

This is the case of the astronaut love triangle, but it is better known for the infamous diaper assault. Did Lisa Nowak wear diapers to keep from making stops during her road trip from Texas to Florida?

In 2006, life was looking great for NASA Astronaut and Naval Captain Lisa Nowak. She had literally been to space on the Shuttle Discovery for 13 days. Young girls and boys everywhere looked up to this fierce woman who appeared to have it all. But in February 2007, Lisa would throw all her hard work away over a man.

On February 5, 2007, Lisa stalked Air Force Captain Colleen Shipman through the Orlando International Airport. After Colleen’s bags failed to arrive, Lisa waited and waited and waited – for two hours, until Colleen got the situation figured out. Then at around 3am, Lisa followed Colleen on a bus that took passengers to their remote parking locations and chased Colleen to her car. This insane behavior was followed by Lisa telling Colleen that she needed help. And Colleen, the kind person, thought maybe should would stay to help. Colleen opened her window just a crack and it was there that Lisa sprayed Colleen with pepper spray. Colleen got away, thinking she had just escaped a car jacking. But it wasn’t that simple. Colleen may have escaped an elaborate plan to kill her.

Colleen and William Oeflein “Billy O,” a NASA Astronaut and Naval Commander, started dating back in November 2006. Before Colleen though, Bill and Lisa had a complicated dating relationship for nearly 2 years, even though Lisa was married to a different man. Bill called it quits with Lisa and thought that Lisa had taken it reasonably well, but it turned out, she did not.

After Bill returned from space in early 2007, Lisa discovered Bill was dating Colleen. Lisa then decided to intercept Colleen at the airport, after driving 14 hours and close to 900 miles to allegedly just “chat.” But her actions at the airport (which were caught on surveillance video) and the items in her “kill bag” and in her car, tell a different story. Lisa’s BMW contained a map to Colleen’s house, printed emails between Colleen and Bill, large garbage bags, latex gloves, and used diapers. In Lisa’s “kill bag,” detectives found a steel mallet, a buck knife, a BB gun (resembling a 9 MM handgun), and 6 feet of rubber tubing.

This infamous case recently resurfaced in pop culture: Check out the movie “Rough Night” and its reference to a “sad astronaut” and the 2019 movie, “Lucy in the Sky.”

Episode 16 – The Air Force Promotion Test Cheating Murder

When Kathleen Lipscomb, a married nurse with 2-children, went missing in the summer of 1986, there were a lot of suspects. But due to either negligence or laziness – the case quickly went cold even through there were various suspicious people in Kathleen’s life, like her Air Force husband, William Lipscomb. They were going through a rough divorce. Also suspicious was her lover, Dr. Pearle (also her boss) and his wife (who refused to leave her husband even after she discovered his infidelity). And then there was her coworker (also her neighbor) who failed to return to work starting on the day she was murdered. All very suspicious.

Bill Lipscomb eventually moved away and left Kathleen’s mother behind to deal with the unsolved murder of her daughter. But Nadine Adams (Kathleen’s mother) refused to sit around. Nadine had her suspicions and she hired a private investigator that would dig so deep, it would reveal an enlisted promotion test cheating scandal so big it could lead to murder if exposed.

Episode 15 – The Legal Office Murder & The Escape Artist

20-year old Marie Willis had only been married to Senior Airman Jeromy Willis for 4-months, but he had already attempted to kill her twice, once by setting her on fire, and once by strangling her in front of their neighbors. Marie was fed up and decided to press charges against Jeromy Willis. Although Jeromy had tried to kill Marie twice, he was still a free man. The Air Force had decided he was no longer a threat to Marie, because Marie had moved from South Carolina to Rhode Island. Jeromy was restricted to the confines of the military base in an attempt to ensure he didn’t do any funny business. But no one was watching him, as he plotted, plotted, and plotted. He knew his wife would have to return to the base to testify against him.

On January 4, 1993, Marie Willis returned to Myrtle Beach, AFB, SC, to testify against her husband at an Article 32 hearing (equivalent to a preliminary hearing). But no one thought Jeromy would be ballsy enough to pull any funny business. Well – everyone was wrong. Jeromy would stroll into the legal office where Marie was waiting to speak to the lead prosecutor and shoot her dead. But he would escape from a military base, after shooting his wife, and would be on the run for 15 days before being caught. Join me as I discuss this bizarre case, and the aftermath. And you won’t want to miss it, because there is so much more that happens.

Of the last 10 parties that you went to, how many didn’t have alcohol? Probably less than 25% (that’s my own wild speculation). But alcohol is EVERYWHERE – there is nowhere to hide. And we as a society like to let loose and let our hair down after work or on weekends. And that’s okay. Because drinking is legal-so what’s the big deal? The issue is when you drink and drive. The question at the beginning of the day should be – how will I get home after I drink? Today, Margot discusses 5 cases where a military member made one idiotic decision to get behind the wheel of a 3k pound death mobile while intoxicated that resulted in someone’s death. The prison sentences were reasonably lengthy and for good reason.

Dig in with Margot as she discusses the cases against Marine Elijah Ferguson, Airman Lane Wyatt, Airman Anjelika Faul, Soldier Jesse Evans Jr., and Monty Janes (military branch unknown). In these cases, Margot will also discuss the resulting tragic deaths of Dr. Michael Sein, 20-year old Citari Townes-Sweatt, Retired-Air Force Sergeant Michael David Brown, CNU college students Kimberly Brin and Sierra Smith, and Soldier Michael Tungate.

The first tragedy is the 200 case of Marine Lance Corporal Elijah Ferguson, from Camp Pendleton, California. He killed Dr. Michael Sein and injured Dr. Sein’s wife, Grace, after he slammed his Dodge Caliber into Dr. Sein’s Aston Martin while going 75 MPH. Dr. Sein was stopped at a red light.

He was convicted of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 15 years in jail.

The second tragedy is the case against Air Force Airman First Class Lane Wyatt, from Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Alaska. In 2013, he killed 20-year old Citari Townes-Sweatt, who was a designated driver, when he took a yellow light in the morning, after a night of drinking. He injured the additional 4 people in Citari’s car and the 4 people in his car.

as part of his plea agreement, he will not have to
serve the last 5 years.

The third tragedy is the case against Anjelika Faul, a dental assistant at Sheppard AFB, Texas. In the early morning hours of June 16, 2012, after a night of excessive drinking (to celebrate her return from her Kuwait deployment) including over 20 servings of alcohol, she received a call from a friend in the hospital. Faul did not feel drunk, so she got in her car and went towards the hospital. Along the way, she noticed she was going the wrong way and attempted to make a U-Turn in the grassy median. As she merged, she crashed into a retired Air Force man named Michael Brown. He was riding a motorcycle. She was eventually convicted of DUI and sentenced to only 2 1/2 years in prison. Surprisingly, a week after her Article 32 hearing (equivalent to a grand jury hearing), she went out with some friends to a bar, got extremely intoxicated, got into a fight, and was arrested for public intoxication. Following that weekend, she attempted suicide and was committed to a hospital for 3 weeks.

The fourth tragedy is the case against Soldier Jesse Evans Jr., a man who had 4 DUIs from 2004 – 2011 (prior to the case in question). But he didn’t learn his lesson. On December 4, 2011, he was driving extremely drunk when he got into the wrong lane going against traffic and he caused a tragic head on collision, killing 19-year old Sierra Smith, and 17-year old Kimberly Brin. I was not able to find a picture of Sierra Smith, so her picture is missing. I apologize.

The fifth and final tragedy that I discuss on the podcast is the almost secretive 2017 crash caused by Monty Janes – who has been named as a “military man” in various articles but neither his military branch, nor his rank have been provided. At least, I have not been able to find it. Monty was attempting to make a left hand turn against traffic when he crashed into soldier Michael Tungate, who was on a motorcycle heading home after his military shift. Michael Tungate died a month later in the hospital. Monty appears to have taken a plea deal to not serve more than 5-years, but the court has decided to leave him in the civilian sector with an ankle monitor, until he is formally retired from the military in 2019. He is scheduled for sentencing in early 2020.

After a one-month long fight to survive the injuries he obtained
after being hit by a drunk military man, he died.

Monty Janes was allowed to quietly retire from the military (branch unknown)
after killing a fellow soldier while driving at least twice above the legal limit.
He plead guilty in exchange for no more than a 5-year sentence,
but the court is waiting until he is fully retired from the
military before handing down their official sentence.
For now, he wears an ankle bracelet.
